My journey

I started my artistic journey about ten years ago. The local high school was offering an evening Welding Class. Welding had been an interest of mine for sometime. So I started the class. One day while I was having my car serviced I decided to wander in the parking lot. While on my walk I noticed some unusual metal pieces sticking out of the dumpster. The unusual pieces turned out to be mufflers from Subaru vehicles. I ended up going home with those mufflers and several other engine parts in the trunk of my car. As I was leaving I received a few frowns as to why I wanted "those pieces of junk"as they called it.
I took the mufflers and engine parts to my Welding Class. There I created my first of many outdoor sculptures. My Welding Teacher saw my interest in metal and encouraged me to "check out the nearby salvage yards". I took his advice and came back with many pieces of metal. As I would walk around the yard it was like the pieces were jumping out at at me. I would soon leave with a trunk load of treasures.
As I put them out and really had a chance to examine them, I saw so much potential in their shapes, sizes and colors.
I had been drawn to glass beads for many years and had a substantial collection. Somehow I felt a strong desire to put the beads with the metal pieces. Here was rusted metal against beautiful colored glass. It was the male and female coming together. As I started to string the beads on to the metal I realized something was missing. I experimented with different objects to finish the pieces. I found the brass bells and knew that was it. Hence, I created my first piece of "Recycled Wind Art".
Today, I am able to create my "Recycled Wind Art" on a full time basis and am loving every minute of it. This is just the beginning for me, having the chance to exhibit and sell my work is really what it is all about for me.
I believe exhibiting my work is the first step for me to do my small part in creating awareness about the importance of recycling.
With gratitude,
Rose Burek
